Elle Magazine profiles Dr. Gentile’s laser assisted facelift technique “Smartlifting™” in January 2009 Elle Beauty News
Dateline (01/03/20089 Boardman,Ohio). Elle Magazine features Dr. Gentile’s technique of Smartlifting™ in the January 2009 edition. The article “LIFTOFF” in Elle’s Beauty News describes the technology utilized in accomplishing the first laser assisted facelift first performed by Dr. Gentile in 2007. The article details the technological advantages in utilizing the laser to reduce operating times as well as achieving improved sculpting and a tissue tightening effect that is not possible with conventional facelifts. Dr. Gentile has completed nearly 200 Smartlifting™ procedures and he believes Smartlifting™ is the first of many technological advances that will make facial rejuvenation procedures quicker, easier, and less costly for patients interested in facial rejuvenation. Commenting on the development of the technique Dr. Gentile stated that most patients are interested in easier less costly solutions for facial aging that don’t require general anesthesia to LIFTOFF the years.
“Smartlifting™, the LaserSmartLift™ and the UltraMiniLift™ are proprietary procedures developed representing our specialty’s first laser assisted facelift. Utilizing the Cynosure SmartLipo™ 1064 Nd:YAG laser we are now able to gently separate the layer between the skin and facial muscles without extensive cutting and dissection. With Smartlifting™ operating time is significantly reduced as the laser helps to seal of blood vessels before the lifting portions of the facelift operation are begun. The laser also has the added benefit of strengthening collage in the facial skin to reduce advanced facial wrinkles” said Dr.Gentile. The addition of a vertical vector “Mixed Plane Rhytidectomy” utilizing advanced self retaining sutures aids in promoting volume enhancements to the eyelid-cheek junction and the adjacent sub-malar regions. The volume enhancing capabilities included in the Smartlifting™ serve to recreate youthful facial characteristics desired by many patients in restoring lost volume in the mid face. Dr. Gentile notes that in Smartlifting™ lower laser settings prevent significant laser lipolysis while achieving improvements in sealing off blood vessels. If lipolysis for more extensive sculpting is necessary higher laser settings and longer laser times will provide increased sculpting to improve the jawline and neck. Smartlifting™ does not arbitrarily reduce facial volume at the usual settings.
Dr. Gentile explained, “Typically in a traditional facelift incisions are made next to the ear and then the skin is lifted off the facial muscles with scissors or scalpels. “Smartlifting™ powered by the Cynosure SmartLipo™ laser, works by precisely delivering thousands of tiny laser pulses to the layer separating the skin from the deeper tissues of the face. Each pulse heats a deep column of tissue which allows a separation to occur between the two layers. Over the next several months following treatment, a natural process called collagenesis results in new, more organized collagen1. This collagen plumps the skin and results in even greater smoothing in addition to the results obtained by the facial lifting procedure.”
According to Dr. Gentile, nearly as important as the advanced laser technology is the use of technologically advanced new suture material the Quill®-SRS self-retaining suture during Smartlifting™ The new suture material allows us to actually lift and reposition the facial laxity without tying any knots. Dr. Gentile also introduced a new technique of lifting the facial laxity with a more vertical vector of lift utilizing the self retaining sutures. “The more vertical technique adds volume to the cheeks and the midface restoring more youthful appearances to the aging face.”
Smartlifting™ procedures benefit both the Plastic Surgeon and the patient notes Dr. Gentile. “The operating time for facelift procedures is dramatically reduced with Smartlifting™ and because it is a more gentle technique than traditional facelifts most of the procedures are performed without general anesthesia. These less invasive facelifts are exactly what many aging baby boomers are looking for.” Dr. Gentile will present the new laser assisted facelift at the International Master Course for Aging Skin at the Palais du Congress in Paris France January 8-11, 2009.
