Rhinoplasty is the technical term for a popular plastic surgery procedure, also referred to as the "nose job". Many people elect to undergo a rhinoplasty to decrease the nose's prominence on their face, or to improve its function. There are many components of the nose that can be changed, including its length, width, shape, height, and the size and shape of the nostrils. Dr. Gentile creates facial harmony among his rhinoplasty patients by surgically altering the nose to balance all the features of the face.

Candidates for Rhinoplasty Surgery

Potential rhinoplasty candidates are healthy individuals with a fully developed nasal bone, and wish to improve the form and/or function of the nose. Female patients must be at least fourteen or fifteen years of age, while males can receive a rhinoplasty as young as sixteen or seventeen years of age. Future rhinoplasty patients should understand the procedure, and its limitations.

Before the Rhinoplasty Surgery

Dr. Gentile may ask you to stop taking certain medications that could affect your surgery or healing process. He may also require lab results in order to perform the surgery. A physical examination and blood and urine samples are generally all that is required of patients unless a health issue poses a potential risk. Other tests may then be necessary.

Prior to surgery, you should fill the prescriptions for any medications your surgeon has prescribed. This way, you will be able to control your discomfort immediately after the anesthesia fades away. You must also arrange for someone to drive you to and from your procedure, and help care for you for the first twenty-four hours following you rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty Surgery

The two ways in which a rhinoplasty surgery can be performed are with an open procedure or a closed procedure. An open procedure is when Dr. Gentile makes an incision in the columella, the skin that separates the nostrils. This provides him with a complete view of the inner structure of the nose when the skin is lifted, and the ability to make more extensive modifications. During a closed procedure, the nose is surgically cut on the inside, a technique that is often used for simpler rhinoplasty cases. Although a closed procedure promotes a shorter healing period, an open procedure is often preferred for better visibility. A rhinoplasty surgery can take one to two hours to complete.

Depending on which alterations you specifically requested, Dr. Gentile may remove bone and tissue from your nose, break and reposition the nasal bones, or manipulate tissues by stitching certain areas together; the overall form can be re-sculpted. Although this sounds painful, many patients report minimal amounts of pain. The level of discomfort differs from one patient to the next due to the specific techniques used, and personal pain threshold.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

The most common side effects associated with a nose job are swelling, bruising (especially around the eyes and nose), pain, congestion, and sensitivity of the face. The nose may be numb for several months following the procedure. Negative side effects are rare during the recovery period, and include infection, bleeding, and the need for an additional surgery. Dr. Gentile can go into full detail about the risks and benefits of a rhinoplasty procedure.

There are some limitations patients must follow for two post-operative weeks. It is important to sleep with your head raised above heart level to prevent additional swelling. Sleep on your back to avoid hitting your nose during sleep. Do not bend over or do any heavy lifting to avoid straining the body during this crucial recovery period. Also, avoid blowing or picking at the nose as the new shape is still somewhat pliable, and stitches could loosen.

Depending on your surgeon’s preferences, the cast on your nose will come off in one to two weeks. Nasal packing is often placed inside the nose to support the internal structure or soak up excess fluids, and may come out after the first few days; some surgeons even allow their patients to remove the packing themselves with specific instruction.

Most patients are able to return to their regular activities in a week, however strenuous activities such as aerobics must be postponed until six weeks following the rhinoplasty. When allowed by Dr. Gentile, you may apply a corrective concealer to hide any bruising or discoloration of the face.

Rhinoplasty Surgery Results

Most patients will notice significant changes in their nose after the first three weeks of recovery, however swelling will continue to decrease, revealing the final results after a year or longer. Some patients continue to see changes until their healing period reaches the two year mark. Plastic surgery procedures place great emphasis on a favorable recovery process as well as skilled surgical techniques.
