A light-skinned woman with dark brown hair in soft waves gazes at her reflection in a mirror, hands gently placed on her cheeks and jawline. Her expression is pleasant and focused. She wears a white sleeveless top, and the soft, even lighting highlights her smooth skin and hair. The light, neutral-toned background suggests a bathroom or vanity, keeping the focus on her and her reflection. - Chemical Peels in Youngstown, OH

What Are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are a non-surgical solution for minor skin blemishes. A chemical solution is applied to the skin to peel away damaged surface-level skin cells, stimulating the body’s natural collagen regeneration process to create new, healthy, and undamaged skin. This treatment brightens the outer layers of the skin and improves conditions such as acne scarring, discolorations, and fine lines.

    • Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) Peels: Chemical peels use AHAs in various concentrations, though the concentration determines who can use them. Trained cosmetologists are approved to apply AHAs with a concentration of 20% to 30%, while doctors can use AHAs with a concentration of 50% to 70%. These treatments erase fine wrinkles and remove surface scars, though the effects of the peels of higher-concentration AHAs last longer.
    • Mandelic Acid Peels: Mandelic Acid is part of the AHA family and is derived from bitter almonds. Since the molecule is larger in size than glycolic acid, it penetrates more slowly, making it a good choice for sensitive skin, including patients who struggle with redness and flushing in their skin. Mandelic Acid offers antibacterial as well as bactericidal properties that are helpful for patients with blemishes or oily skin. It is beneficial for patients with acne or rosacea. A series of peels produces a smoother skin texture and helps with fine lines and wrinkles.
    • MyBody Probiotic Peels: The distinct feature of MyProbiotic Peels lies in the delivery of good bacteria (probiotics), which trick the skin into thinking it is under attack by harmful bacteria. Since the skin is a large organ with significant immune sensitivities, it responds to the application of probiotics with dynamic natural defenses and renewal effects. This collection of PRR (Pattern Recognition Receptors) is responsible for triggering important immune cell responses that stimulate and regenerate skin cells. The biggest difference in this probiotic peel is the ability to influence changes in the skin without injuring it since the probiotics work from the inside out. This process avoids the inflammation caused by traditional chemical peels, which is advantageous to the patient as there is no downtime and minimal risk of adverse side effects. A significant bonus with these peels is the quick results. Positive effects begin immediately, and the skin feels tightened and deeply hydrated.
    • Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) Peels: Trichloroacetic acid peels are great for evening out skin tone and getting rid of imperfections. Unlike AHA peels, TCA peels can even smooth out wrinkles! The results are more noticeable than those of AHA peels but not as dramatic as deeper peels or lasers. The concentration of TCA can be altered to produce results similar to lighter peels and deeper peels. It works well at penetrating the upper reticular dermis, producing superficial improvements in pigmentation problems and correcting wrinkles and deeper problems.
    • Beta Hydroxy Acid & Jessner’s Peels: Only one beta hydroxyl acid-salicylic acid (BHA) exists. The main difference between AHAs and BHAs is their lipid (oil solubility). AHAs are water soluble only, while BHAs are soluble in oil. This means BHAs can penetrate skin pores containing sebum and exfoliate the dead skin cells that are built up inside the pore. Because of this difference in properties, BHAs are better used on oily skin with blackheads and whiteheads, while AHAs are better used on thickened sun-damaged skin where breakouts are not a problem.
    • Pyruvic Acid Peels: Pyruvic acid is found naturally in honey, apples, fermented fruit, and vinegar. This medium-depth peel is known to penetrate rapidly and deeply through the skin, stimulating collagen, elastin, and dermal glycoprotein synthesis. Pyruvic acid has a strong comedolytic effect because, like BHA’s, it is lipid soluble and can penetrate the sebaceous unit. These antimicrobial and comedolytic properties make it useful for peeling patients with acne. There is limited discomfort in the post-peel period, and redness only lasts for about 15 minutes after peeling.

One of our favorite peeling agents is Jessner’s solution, which contains resorcinol, salicylic acid, and lactic acid. This combination provides a light to medium-depth peel that is very safe and suitable for all skin types.

    • PCA Skin Lightening Peel: The PCA skin lightening peel is used on patients with pigmentation problems or melisma. It is an enhanced Jessner’s formula containing Lactic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Citric Acid, Kojic Acid, and Hydroquinone. The peel helps to promote an even skin tone and a clear complexion.
    • SkinMedica Vitalize Peel: The Vitalize Peel is like a Jessner’s peel augmented with Retinoic Acid. Salicylic acid is a comedolytic and anti-inflammatory agent retinoic acid that inhibits sebum production and reduces hyperkeratinization. This peel helps to log pores and prevent the formation of new papules.

What to Expect
on the Day of a
Chemical Peel Treatment

When you are ready to begin your chemical peel, your aesthetician will provide you with protective eyewear and carefully cleanse your skin before applying the chemical solution. Depending on the strength of your chosen chemical peel, you may feel mild to moderate stinging as the solution removes cells from your skin’s surface layers. For stronger chemical peels, Gentile Plastic Surgery may provide a topical anesthetic to help numb the skin and prevent any further discomfort. Once the chemical solution has been applied and taken effect, it will be neutralized with another solution and cleansed from your skin.

Chemical Peels Recovery

Chemical peels treat and remove the skin’s surface layers, so it is common for patients to feel mild to moderate stinging during and after the treatment. After your treatment, you will be given an ice pack or aloe vera to soothe your skin.

Light and medium peels, such as AHA and TCA, require little downtime, and most patients resume their normal schedules after their treatments. However, it is strongly recommended that patients avoid sun exposure following their chemical peel, as the skin will be even more sensitive to sun damage, and the benefits of the chemical peel may be impacted or reversed.
