What is a
Rhinoplasty?

You’ve probably heard rhinoplasty called, by its informal name, a “nose job.” Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that allows you to entirely reshape your nose by changing the length, width, height, and shape, and altering the nostrils’ shape. There are several types of rhinoplasty procedures that Dr. Gentile recommends, depending on your needs:

  • Functional Rhinoplasty

A functional rhinoplasty aims to address the basic functionality of the nose and improve the patient’s breathing. This procedure reshapes the internal nasal passages to correct issues such as a deviated septum, collapsed nasal valves, and other nasal obstructions. The goal is to restore the patient’s ability to breathe normally and improve their quality of life.

  • Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty is necessary when a previous procedure fails to meet a patient’s aesthetic goals, does not fully correct a functionality issue in the nose, or, in some cases, has resulted in facial imbalance due to improper techniques applied in the initial procedure. As rhinoplasties are delicate and complex procedures, selecting a plastic surgeon who is experienced and certified in reconstructive surgery is important to correct issues created by a previous procedure.

  • Not every patient is ready for a permanent change to their nose. In these cases, non-surgical rhinoplasty can help create temporary minor cosmetic changes by adding dermal filler to recontour the shape of the nose and achieve facial harmony. Patients can make small adjustments to their nose shape and size without committing to the recovery of a surgical procedure.

What are the
benefits of a

Many of Dr. Gentile’s patients in Youngstown and Akron, OH, request rhinoplasty procedures for the following benefits:

  • Improving their breathing and basic functionality of the nose
  • Correcting nasal obstructions such as a deviated septum
  • Adjusting their facial balance by changing the shape, size, or width of the nose
  • Achieving facial aesthetic goals by altering the tip of the nose or the bridge of the nose

Who are the

for a Rhinoplasty?

What’s the
First Step?

The first step in a rhinoplasty procedure in the great Cleveland area is to schedule a consultation at Gentile Plastic Surgery at either location in Youngstown or Akron, OH. You will meet with Dr. Gentile so he can make sure that rhinoplasty is the best option for you and to make sure you’re healthy enough for surgery. Dr. Gentile will listen to your reasons for electing a rhinoplasty, evaluate the condition of your nose, and make recommendations as to which rhinoplasty technique will best suit your aesthetic and functional goals. He will also review before-and-after pictures of previous patients so you may better understand what is and is not possible with a rhinoplasty.

If Dr. Gentile determines you are suitable for a rhinoplasty procedure, he will create a surgical plan tailored to your needs. He may also give you a prescription for pain medication after your procedure, which you may fill before your appointment so that you do not have to worry about any discomfort once the procedure is complete. You may then schedule your rhinoplasty procedure with our patient care team member.

What to Expect
on the Day of
Rhinoplasty Surgery

Every rhinoplasty will differ based on individual patient goals and nose shape, though the general approach remains the same. Patients will be placed under general anesthesia so that they will not feel discomfort during the procedure. When patients are sedated, Dr. Gentile will begin the procedure by making incisions in the nose, either through the bridge or in the nostril, to reshape the nose. This allows Dr. Gentile to manipulate and reshape soft tissue and bone to create the ideal shape for his patients.

When the procedure is complete, patients are held for observation until the anesthesia wears off. After the procedure, they are required to arrange transportation with a trusted friend or relative.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

The level of discomfort and swelling caused by a rhinoplasty is different for everyone, but you can expect a moderate amount of both in the immediate aftermath of your surgery. Most people will need to wear a bandage for about two weeks, though this may vary according to the extent of surgery and will be up to Dr. Gentile’s discretion. You’ll also get some tips to help you heal faster, like how to sleep and avoid reinjury.

Most patients are able to resume their regular activities two to four weeks after their rhinoplasty procedure. The healing process may last three to four months. Once the swelling and slight bruising have subsided, the improvements of your rhinoplasty should last forever.
