Rhinoplasty/ Revisions Q & A

What is rhinoplasty?

You’ve probably heard rhinoplasty called by its informal name, a “nose job.” Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that allows you to entirely reshape your nose by changing the length, width, height, and shape as well as altering the shape of the nostrils.

Who is a candidate for rhinoplasty?

Some people choose to do this for cosmetic reasons, for example, to decrease the prominence of a larger nose. Many other people also choose rhinoplasty to help improve their nose’s function, if it was recently broken or to fix a deviated septum.

To perform a rhinoplasty, the nasal bone must be fully developed. This usually occurs around 14 or 15 for women and at about 16 or 17 for males, but everyone develops at a different pace.

What happens during a rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure, so the process should feel familiar to anyone who’s ever had surgery before.

Before your rhinoplasty

Fire, you’ll need to meet with Dr. Gentile, so he can make sure that a rhinoplasty is the best option for you, and to make sure you’re healthy enough for surgery. He may also give you a prescription for pain medication for after your procedure. Fill this before your appointment so you don’t have to worry about any discomfort when you’re done, and make sure you arrange for someone to drive you home from the office after the procedure.

During your rhinoplasty

You’ll be placed under general anesthesia, so you won’t have to worry about anything during your procedure. Rhinoplasties vary based on your goals and on individual nose shape, but essentially Dr. Gentile will make an incision in the nose either through the bridge or in the nostril, and then he can begin to reshape the nose. This means something different for everyone, but basically involves manipulation and reshaping of both soft tissue and bone to create the ideal shape for you.

Recovering from a rhinoplasty

The level of discomfort and swelling caused by a rhinoplasty is different for everyone, but you can expect a moderate amount of both in the immediate aftermath of your surgery. Most people will need to wear a bandage for about two weeks, but this will be up to Dr. Gentile’s discretion. You’ll also get some tips to help you heal faster, like how to sleep and avoid reinjury. Once the swelling and slight bruising has subsided, the improvements of your rhinoplasty should last forever.
