Revision Rhinoplasty

Introduction

Introduction to Revision Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasties or “nose jobs” are a permanent solution for anyone unhappy with their nose’s shape, function, or appearance. Whether you prefer a more proportional nose or you haven’t been able to breathe right through your nostrils since you broke your nose, a rhinoplasty can help. If a rhinoplasty has gone wrong, a secondary rhinoplasty is a revision rhinoplasty and needs to be very carefully carried out, given the compromised structure of the nose from previous surgeries. If you reside in the Youngstown, Akron, or Cleveland Metro area or adjacent states and are interested in how revision rhinoplasty could help you, call double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Gentile’s office of Gentile Plastic Surgery or use the online scheduling tool to make an appointment.

What is a
Revision Rhinoplasty?

A revision rhinoplasty aims to correct nasal deformities while preserving maximal nasal function. Given that this is a repeat surgery, it has the added pressure of having to work with a compromised nasal structure that has already been manipulated. Often, in revision rhinoplasties, scar tissue from the previous surgery and a dissatisfied patient with higher expectations can make the job more challenging. Further, revision rhinoplasty sometimes also requires the use of cartilage to replace damaged and/or deficient cartilage removed in the prior surgery.

What are the
benefits of a
Revision Rhinoplasty?

Our patients who have received a revision rhinoplasty in the Cleveland area have enjoyed long-lasting results and final satisfaction. Some other benefits that have been shared are as follows:

  • Addressing drooping nasal tip
  • Boost in self-esteem
  • Nose surgery can change the size and shape of your nose.
  • Reinforced cartilage
  • Restoring nasal function
  • Restoring nasal structure

What’s the
First Step?

First, you’ll need to meet with Dr. Gentile to ensure that revision rhinoplasty is your best option and that you’re healthy enough for surgery. He will thoroughly examine your nasal elements while listening to your aesthetic and functional goals and concerns. He will then outline his intended techniques to manage your expectations and consider whether this procedure is right for you.

Once you both agree to proceed, he will give you a customized surgical plan to take to the patient concierge. He may also give you a prescription for pain medication after your procedure. Fill this prescription out before your appointment so you don’t have to worry about any discomfort when you’re done, and make sure you arrange for someone to drive you home from the office after the procedure.

What to Expect
on the Day of
Revision Rhinoplasty Surgery

On the day of your revision rhinoplasty procedure, Dr. Gentile and his staff will welcome you and get you settled in the state-of-the-art surgical suite. They will review the surgical plan with you to make sure you are comfortable with it and do not have any final concerns. A board-certified anesthetist will then administer anesthesia to ensure your comfort during the surgery.

Once you are comfortable and numb, Dr. Gentile will make an incision in the nose, either through the bridge or in the nostril, and then he can begin to reshape it. This process will be different for everyone, but it involves manipulating and reshaping both soft tissue and bone to create the ideal shape.

Revision rhinoplasty can take between one and three hours, depending on the extent of the adjustments made to your nasal elements.

Revision Rhinoplasty Recovery

The level of discomfort and swelling caused by a rhinoplasty is different for everyone, but you can expect a moderate amount of both in the immediate aftermath of your surgery. Most people will need to wear a bandage for about two weeks, but this will be up to Dr. Gentile’s discretion.

You’ll also receive some tips to help you heal faster, such as sleeping and avoiding re-injury. Once the swelling and slight bruising have subsided, your rhinoplasty’s improvements should last forever.

If you’re interested in rhinoplasty or would like to learn more about the process, call the office or use the online scheduling tool to make an appointment.
